The Botanical Garden was opened in 1884 and is located north of the city center in the immediate vicinity of the Kiel Fjord, the Kunsthalle and the university clinics. Thanks to the initiative of the Association for the Conservation and Promotion of the Old Botanical Garden, the garden still exists today and is in its entirety a natural and cultural monument. The approximately 2.5 hectares of hilly terrain is characterized by a partially very old woodland of unique beauty, characterized by exotic plants such as the Coast redwood and one of the oldest and highest Dawn redwoods of the European mainland, an important ginkgo tree, a rare Amur cork tree, a Japanese needle juniper and a group of over 20-meter-tall cypress trees.
